Frequently Asked Questions

What if I can’t make a workshop date?

You may be interested in signing up for the FunkyTown online tutorial website which has close to 40 hours of content. Please visit the online wedding photography tutorial site for more information.

Does the workshop include overnight accommodations or a travel reimbursement?

The workshop does not include transportation or accommodations.

How do I register?

Visit the registration form to book your spot today. Some cities book up quickly.

Can you give me an example of something I’ll learn that may not already know?

We’re going to spend a good amount of time training your eye to see light the way your camera sees light rather than the way we see light with our eyes. For instance, this picture was taken outside at 4pm in August and no flash was used. There is no dodging and burning and the only thing I did to the file was convert it to black and white. We’ll discuss how to achieve results like this (and we’ll go outside to practice). That way you can take one setting and make it look like several by simply interpreting the light differently. Every month I also post two free online tutorials and you’re welcome to check them out here (P.S. You’ll get a free account for the online tutorials when you register for an in-person workshop).

Do I need to bring my camera to the workshop?

Yes. We’re going to do hands-on interactive demonstrations in each workshop so please bring your camera so you can follow along. Please bring a telephoto and a standard zoom lens for practice. You’ll have a 1.5 hour shoot with a model at the end of the workshop to practice skills learned.

What photography skills do I need?

Unfortunately, this workshop will not teach you the fundamentals of photography. You’re expected to know how to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO using the manual setting on your camera. You should be experienced shooting with a DSLR camera. If you answer yes to the following questions you’ll have no trouble following along:

1) Do you know how to under expose by one stop ?
2) Do you know how to control the ISO settings on your camera?
3) Do you know what the term shallow depth of field means?
4) Do you know how to slow your shutter speed to create intentional blur in a photo?
5) Do you know how to control your aperture to create selective focus on a subject?

Although we will go over flash and off-camera flash techniques, you do not need to have flash (or off-camera flash) equipment to participate in the workshop. Most of our practice time will focus on working with ambient light.

Do I need to have experience photographing weddings?

This workshop is designed to help you gain the skills and inspiration needed to be a creative wedding photographer regardless of your experience with weddings.

Will I get free food?

Yes. Lunch is included.

What is the length of the workshop?

The workshop is one day, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a 45 minute break for lunch.

Are the workshops interactive or is it just a lecture?

All of the workshops are extremely interactive so you’ll have a chance to practice posing and lighting skills in a friendly environment.

Will there be time for a portfolio review?

Unfortunately, because we go over so much information in the workshop, there won’t be time for a critique session. I am available to offer you a critique of your work (either a full wedding, your portfolio, etc.) via Skype. Please get in touch with me individually for this service. The cost is $300 per hour.

How many students will be in each workshop?

The FunkyTown Bootcamp is limited to no more than 15 participants.

To cover the cost of travel, the model, workshop classroom, etc., a minimum of five participants is required to run the workshop. However, most cities sell out several months ahead of time so it’s a good idea to sign up early (and take advantage of an early bird special). If a workshop has to be canceled, I will give you at least six weeks notice and will provide you with a full refund and free access to the online tutorials.

What is the location of the workshop in my city?
The location will be booked approximately six weeks before the workshop date. We often have the workshops at a college or university campus, and sometimes in a hotel suite.
