Engagement Proposal – Paul & Emily – la Mariposa Hotel, Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
I can’t even tell you how much fun it was to photograph this marriage proposal. Paul was in touch a few weeks ahead of their trip to Costa Rica and we chose the patio of la Mariposa hotel since it has one of the nicest views of the national park and scenery in Manuel Antonio. I brought my cameras along and joined the other tourists while we watched a capuchin monkey family play on the deck and around the stairs, which allowed me to blend in perfectly as a fake tourist. When they arrived I sat down at a table near them so I could keep an eye on Paul, who was going to rub his head a few times, make eye contact and then stand up to ask Emily to marry him. When it all started happening Emily didn’t notice me, even though I stood up and began snapping as Paul got down on one knee and presented her with a gorgeous engagement ring. Her reaction was so in-the-moment and emotional — completely surprised and blown away. And even though we hadn’t met yet, I started to tear up right along with her. The feeling of being a part of something so special is something I’ll always remember. What an honour and privilege to be a part of such a happy surprise. Congratulations Emily & Paul!
