If you’ve ever wondered what’s involved in a documentary or lifestyle family session here is a great example! Rather than posing, I simply act as a fly on the wall and allow children to play and interact with their parents without any direction. If they look at the camera, no problem… I try to be unobtrusive, but of course babies will notice the clicking camera and I often get really beautiful portraits of their expressions. As you can see the living room and bedroom are great places to play with your child, while getting lots of great candid moments that will remind you and your child of this fleeting time in your lives.
We had this family session at Christmas-time and I loved this little one’s red sweater and holiday outfit. While I usually show a lot of black and white photography on my blog (B&Ws eliminate contrasting colours in the background and I find lend well to storytelling images), I always give families two versions of every image – both a B&W + a colour image. That way you have options in terms of printing your family photos. 🙂 And speaking of variety, I don’t hold back when it comes to photographing your children – expressions can change in a fraction of a second, after all – so I always provide an unlimited number of photos in each family’s collection. This blog post shows only a small fraction of the photos the family received during their one hour play date.
