Start with a telephoto lens such as an 80-200mm lens, a 50mm, 85mm or 105mm prime will also work. If you don’t have any of the above, try a 24-70mm at 70mm. Open up to the widest aperture (ie 1.8, 2.8 or 3.5).

Now, grab a piece of tissue paper.

Find and focus on a subject while moving the tissue paper around in front of your lens (either having the tissue touch the lens, or holding the tissue about one centimeter to five centimeters away from the lens – whatever looks good.

Now, graduate to using the same technique (putting your lens VERY close to something) – a wine glass, a bouquet of flowers, a leaf on a tree, anything, ensuring the object closest to the camera is VERY blurry and frame your subject.

This trick will help you eliminate clutter and the photos will look more creative.

I used tissue paper to achieve the above result.
